DC Films has found their Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leslie Grace will be playing Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in the upcoming live-action Batgirl solo film set to debut exclusively on HBO Max.
Grace will also be Batgirl in future live-action films in the DC Extended Universe.
The Batgirl film has been in the works in some capacity since 2017 and has ramped up development in recent months after announcing that Ms. Marvel and Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have taken the helm of the HBO Max project.
The Script for Batgirl has already been written by Christina Hodson, who has also worked in other DC Films such as Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and the upcoming The Flash movie.
Grace confirmed the rumors on Twitter saying that she is “beyond excited” to portray Barbara.
The In The Heights star will be the latest actress to portray Barbara Gordon in live-action, following the footsteps of Yvonne Craig on the ’60s Batman series, Alicia Silverstone in Batman & Robin, Dina Meyer on the Birds of Prey series, Jete Laurence on Gotham, and Savannah Welch on Titans.
Batgirl was created by William Dozier, Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox, and Carmine Infantino and debuted in Detective Comics #359.
Over time, Barbara began to become an even more prominent character in the DC universe, and after becoming paralyzed during the events of 1988’s Batman: The Killing Joke, she began operating as the hacker and computer expert Oracle. In the 2011 New 52 relaunch, Barbara recovered from her paralysis thanks to surgery and has operated as both Batgirl and Oracle in certain contexts.
Batgirl does not have a release date, but Warners has previously indicated it will likely bow on HBO Max in 2023.
