Meet John Stewart and Hal Jordan in HBO’s ‘Lanterns’

DC Studios and HBO have officially unveiled the first look at “Lanterns,” the highly anticipated Green Lantern TV series featuring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan.

While the two leads aren’t suited up in full Green Lantern uniforms, a closer look at the image reveals a green power ring on Chandler’s finger, hinting at the cosmic power they wield.

‘Lanterns’ Plot and Creative Team

According to the official synopsis, the series follows new recruit John Stewart and veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops investigating a murder in the American heartland. The dark, Earth-based mystery is expected to blend elements of detective drama and cosmic superhero storytelling, drawing comparisons to “True Detective” with a DC twist.

The show is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, all of whom serve as executive producers. James Hawes is also on board as both an executive producer and director for the first two episodes.

Who Are John Stewart and Hal Jordan? A Look at Their Comic Book Legacy

The Green Lantern Corps is one of DC Comics’ most storied superhero legacies, and both John Stewart and Hal Jordan have been central figures in its history.

  • Hal Jordan first appeared in Showcase #22 (1959), created by John Broome and Gil Kane. As the second Green Lantern (after Alan Scott, the Golden Age version), Hal is a fearless test pilot chosen by the dying alien Abin Surto wield the power ring. His willpower-driven abilities and leadership made him one of the most prominent Green Lanterns, playing a crucial role in major DC events like Blackest Night and Crisis on Infinite Earths.
  • John Stewart debuted in Green Lantern #87 (1971), created by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams. As one of the first major Black superheroes in comics, John was initially a backup Lantern but eventually became a fan-favorite for his strong sense of justice, tactical brilliance, and military background. His popularity surged through “Justice League” and “Justice League Unlimited,” where he became the definitive Green Lantern for a generation of fans.

Both characters have been central to some of the biggest Green Lantern storylines, including Emerald TwilightSinestro Corps War, and Darkest Night. Now, “Lanterns” will bring these iconic space cops to live-action in a gritty detective-style mystery that blends grounded storytelling with cosmic superhero action.

When Will ‘Lanterns’ Release?

While HBO and DC Studios have yet to announce an official release date, “Lanterns” is shaping up to be a major installment in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe (DCU). As part of the “Gods and Monsters” chapter, the series will play a significant role in shaping the future of DC storytelling on HBO.
