Sydney Sweeney, renowned for her roles in “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus,” is reportedly in final negotiations to star in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic Japanese mecha franchise, “Gundam.” The film is being co-developed by Legendary Entertainment and Bandai Namco Filmworks, with “Sweet Tooth” showrunner Jim Mickle set to write and direct.

While specific details about Sweeney’s character and the film’s plot remain under wraps, her potential involvement marks a significant milestone in bringing the beloved anime series to a global audience. The “Gundam” franchise, which began in 1979 with “Mobile Suit Gundam,” has expanded over the decades to include numerous TV series, films, manga, and video games, and is credited with popularizing the giant robot genre.
Sweeney’s recent film work includes “Madame Web,” “Immaculate,” and Ron Howard’s “Eden.” She also has a slew of other projects on the horizon, such as the AppleTV+ film “Echo Valley” alongside Julianne Moore and an adaptation of the horror story “The Housemaid” with Amanda Seyfried.
The live-action “Gundam” movie has been in development for several years, with Legendary Entertainment first announcing the project in 2018. Initially, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was attached to helm the film for Netflix, but the project has since transitioned to Mickle’s direction under Legendary and Bandai Namco’s collaboration.
