Jason Momoa Cast as Lobo in DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Jason Momoa, star of Aquaman and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom, has officially been cast as the intergalactic antihero Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Deadline confirms. This marks a thrilling new chapter for the actor as he transitions from the underwater kingdom of Atlantis to the dangerous, space-faring world of the Last Czarnian.

Momoa has long been vocal about his desire to play Lobo, the violent, irreverent bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia. In fact, he’s been linked to the role even before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins at DC Studios. Momoa took to Instagram to confirm the news, sharing a screenshot from a previous interview where he enthusiastically declared, “I collect comics, and Lobo was always my favorite… It’s the perfect role.” He added, “If they call me, it’s a f*ck yeah.” In the post, Momoa also captioned, “They called,” signaling his excitement and commitment to this new, larger-than-life role.

Lobo, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983. With his superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and near-invulnerability, Lobo has become one of the most iconic antiheroes in the DC Universe. His penchant for destruction, chaos, and collecting bounties across the galaxy makes him a perfect match for Momoa’s larger-than-life presence. Known for his violent personality, Lobo’s not your typical hero—he’s someone who revels in causing mayhem, and this no-holds-barred attitude is sure to bring an exciting, fresh dynamic to the DCU.

In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Momoa will join a stellar cast. Milly Alcock, known for her standout role in House of the Dragon, will star as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) has been cast as Krem of the Yellow Hill, the film’s main antagonist. Eve Ridley, from The Three-Body Problem, rounds out the cast as Ruthye Mary Knoll, an alien girl on a mission of vengeance.

The film will be directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya and Cruella), based on a script by Ana Nogueira, adapting Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The series, illustrated by Bilquis Evely, follows Ruthye’s quest to avenge her father’s death at the hands of Krem. Along the way, she teams up with Supergirl for an action-packed adventure across the galaxy.

Momoa’s casting in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comes as a significant move for the DC Universe, especially as he’s the first actor from the DCEU to be recast in a new role for the rebooted franchise under Gunn and Safran. His prior involvement with the DCEU includes five films as Aquaman, grossing a combined total of over $1.5 billion worldwide. The upcoming Supergirl film is set to release on June 26, 2026, as the second entry in the new DCU, following Superman: Legacy in 2025.

As production gears up to begin in January 2024, DC Studios is clearly banking on Momoa’s star power to bring Lobo to life. With his impressive track record in both action-packed blockbusters and smaller projects (A Minecraft Movie, Fast X: Part 2, and Chief of War among them), Momoa’s future in the DC Universe looks even brighter than ever. Fans can expect an unforgettable, larger-than-life portrayal of one of DC’s most notorious characters.

Stay tuned for more details as production kicks off, and with Momoa in the lead, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to be a wild, cosmic ride through the DC Universe.
