Elseworlds Returns with a Futuristic Take on Batman—and It Looks Wild

DC Comics is launching a bold new Elseworlds series this summer: Immortal Legend Batman. Revealed at C2E2 during the “Kyle Higgins Presents: Radiant Black, The Massive-Verse, and More” panel, this futuristic take on the Dark Knight is set centuries ahead in a galaxy-spanning civilization. The creative team includes Kyle Higgins (Radiant Black), Mat Groom (Ultraman), artists Dan Mora (Superman) and Erica D’Urso (Captain Marvel), colorist Igor Monti, and letterer Becca Carey.

In this narrative, humanity’s expansion across planets leads to the harnessing of dark matter, inadvertently breaching a barrier to the universe’s shadow realm. This unleashes soulless apparitions known as Shadows. To combat this threat, Batman, Robin, and Nightwing tap into the shadow energy, becoming Immortal Legends. The series draws inspiration from science fiction and Japanese tokusatsu, promising a unique blend of cosmic adventure and superhero drama.

Higgins describes the project as “the perfect storm of timing, idea, and creative team,” highlighting the team’s previous collaborations and shared appreciation for tokusatsu influences. Groom adds that the series aims to explore Batman’s core traits—determination, resilience, and selflessness—in a new context as he becomes a wandering hero in the stars.

Immortal Legend Batman is part of DC’s revitalized Elseworlds imprint, which features stories set outside the main continuity, allowing for innovative reinterpretations of iconic characters. The series is scheduled to debut in summer 2025.
