The Creed Lives On: Netflix Greenlights Live-Action Assassin’s Creed Series

After years of speculation, delays, and cautious optimism, Netflix has officially greenlit the long-awaited live-action Assassin’s Creed series — and the team behind it is stacked. Helming the project are Emmy-nominated storytellers Roberto Patino (DMZWestworldSons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (HaloHomecomingThe Killing), who will serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.

For fans who’ve long dreamed of seeing hidden blades, Animus tech, and the eternal war between Assassins and Templars play out in live-action, this is the moment we’ve been waiting for.

A Franchise Built for Storytelling

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed has always been cinematic — parkour-fueled action, sprawling timelines, rich historical settings, and complex characters grappling with faith, freedom, and fate. From the moment Desmond Miles stepped into the Animus in 2007, players knew this world was bigger than just one timeline or one man.

According to Netflix’s official statement, the live-action series is described as a high-octane thriller that spans pivotal moments in human history while centering on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one fighting for free will, the other for total control.

Wiener and Patino shared in a joint statement:

“We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007. Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us… Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith… This is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time.”

That’s not just PR-speak. That’s a mission statement. And it’s one that fans should pay close attention to.

The Team Behind the Blade

The series will be executive produced by Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television, as well as Matt O’Toole, who’s no stranger to high-stakes adaptations. Margaret Boykin, head of content at Ubisoft Film & TV, added:

“We are so excited to work alongside Roberto, David, and our Netflix partners to bring this beloved franchise to series… We look forward to delivering an experience that speaks to the heart of what fans love about Assassin’s Creed.”

This announcement comes as the first fruit of a multi-project deal struck between Netflix and Ubisoft in 2020, a move that signaled a broader intent to expand Assassin’s Creed beyond gaming and into mainstream entertainment.

Netflix VP Peter Friedlander praised the showrunners’ approach, saying:

“Guided by the deft hands of Roberto Patino and David Wiener, the team has carefully crafted an epic adventure that both honors the legacy of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and invites longtime fans and newcomers alike to experience the thrill of the Brotherhood as never before.”

What Fans Can Expect

Let’s be clear: the bar is high. Assassin’s Creed fans are passionate — and vocal. Past attempts to adapt the franchise (like the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender) were met with lukewarm reception, largely because they missed the heart of the games: philosophical tension, historical immersion, and the personal cost of legacy.

This new series seems committed to delivering all that and more.

From ancient cities to modern conspiracies, from Ezio to Eivor, from parkour rooftop escapes to deep Animus dives — the series has endless possibilities. But it also faces a major challenge: doing justice to a franchise that has meant so much to so many.

At Comic Misfits, we’re cautiously optimistic — but more than anything, we’re excited. The Creed is bigger than any one story, and this may finally be the adaptation that gets it right.

Will You Join the Brotherhood?

Whether you’re a lifelong Assassin’s Creed fan or just curious about what all the hype is about, now’s the time to jump in. With the combined forces of Ubisoft and Netflix, the Animus is warming up — and the Brotherhood is rising.
